Career Goals

Within the field of sports, there are so many job categories to enter. With me studying Sport Management, I really hope that I can explore one of these categories. With a sport management degree, once acquires knowledge about marketing, management, ethics, logistics, law, statistics, psychology, and many others important subjects within the context of sports. I still am not exactly sure which direction I will take my sport management degree, but I think I have a general idea. The decision-making processes that occur within a sports organization require the brightest analytically driven and logical minds, and with the development of new statistics using modern technology, there is a constant flow of information to unpack. I want to be somebody that makes these decisions. These decisions can be about an organization’s marketing strategy, a team’s player personnel and coaching personnel, how employees within the organization are managed, and much more. I would like to be more concerned with processes by which players are evaluated and selected to be part of a team, and, if during the season, certain players should be moved on from in favor of players from minor leagues or from other teams. On a Professional level, this role can be defined as the General Manager, and the positions directly below the General Manager. In a collegiate setting, the athletic director is the person who makes such decisions. In order to pursue these goals, I would pursue an MBA.

Along with this job, I could see myself going in the legal direction. I think the way that I would want to practice law within in the sports industry would be through player representation. I would want to be a player agent who disputes contractual issues, vouches for the rights of individual players, and helps promote the careers of players. I could see myself representing players from all sorts of different leagues or levels. I especially think that in collegiate athletics, with the emergence of player compensation based on their Name, Image, and Likeness, there is the opportunity for unionization, and therefore, player legal representation. This is such a recent development however, and as of right now, these opportunities for lawyers do not exist. In order to achieve this goal, I would pursue a Law degree after studying with an undergraduate degree in Sport Management. In 5-10 years, I envision myself having completed some form of graduate studying, and hopefully getting involved in some organization in some league, or possibly a collegiate athletic department, and beginning to work my way up an organizational ladder. I suppose that a dream job would be to coach a football team, however, this is lofty since most coaches spend a lot of time playing football, usually up to the collegiate or professional level. Alas, I see there being a place for me in the sports industry if I stay on my current path and achieve everything that I must achieve to get to that point.
